Meeting of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL S.Stefanou with the Deputy Minister of Culture

Within the context of an exchange of views centred on culture issues, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou had a meeting today with the Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou. During the meeting, the problems Cypriot culture creators and the field of culture in general are facing were raised.
On the part of AKEL, various issues were raised for discussion including the need for a significant increase in the funds allocated for culture, the speedy promotion of the bill on the professional registration of artists which unfortunately has been delayed for years, the strengthening of the programmes subsidising cultural activity, the urgent need for the construction of a modern Cypriot library and other necessary infrastructures, the effective implementation of the Law on the minimum percentage of enrichment of public buildings with works of art at 1% of the cost, the substantive application of the “Youth Card” and the essential upgrading of cultural lessons and activities in the education system.
A wide exchange of views followed, with the Deputy Minister of Culture informing AKEL about the policies being promoted and putting forward her own suggestions. It was agreed that there should be a dialogue between the Deputy Ministry and AKEL on cultural issues.
