Barnet’s first cycleway is now open and runs between Burnt Oak and Colindale, linking the two neighbourhoods with a shared pedestrian and cycle path.
Designed to encourage cycling, walking, and running, cycleways are high-quality cycle routes that link communities, businesses and destinations across London and form part of Transport for London’s cycleway scheme.
This new route forms an integral part of the envisioned Barnet Loop, a 17-mile network, which when fully implemented, will link parks, green spaces and town centres throughout the borough.
Councillor Alan Schneiderman, Barnet Council Cabinet member for Environment and Climate Change, said:
“It’s great to get the wheels in motion in Barnet with our first official TfL cycleway, as we fulfil our commitments to improving sustainable transport options for our residents.
“By encouraging cycling we can help to reduce traffic congestion, alleviate pollution, and contribute to a cleaner, greener borough for generations to come.”
Beyond the immediate health benefits, the introduction of dedicated cycle infrastructure enhances safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike. Separating cyclists from motorised traffic not only mitigates the risk of accidents but also fosters a sense of security, encouraging more individuals to embrace active travel options.
Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said:
“Expanding London’s cycleway network is key to getting more Londoners to choose cycling as their mode of transport for shorter trips.
“Cycleway 51 will add another route to our ever-growing network of cycleways in London, helping Londoners travel more safely and easily between Burnt Oak and Colindale and building a better, greener London for everyone.”
