As a year-round destination Larnaka region kicks of the New Year by highlighting authentic experiences, along with exciting projects and upgrades that winter visitors can enjoy.
Cultural heritage and rural charm
The region’s commitment to preserving traditions and landmarks will continue with projects such as the restoration of the ‘Faros’ lighthouse in Pervolia, the preservation of three Colonial fountains in Tochni, and support for the forthcoming Fishing Museum in Zygi. In addition, the Profitis Ilias Chapel in Voroklini will be illuminated at night, offering breathtaking sea views, plus a unique venture exploring the myths and legends of rural Larnaka will be launched. A sculpture park featuring works by artists from the Larnaka Art Workshops Neighbourhood will complete the city’s art scene.
The region also has plans to enrich the rural and mountainous communities. Proposed developments include a ‘village farm’ in Agios Theodoros, showcasing Cypriot farm animals, local greenery, and traditional products. Themed nature trails in the Rural Larnaka Honey Villages and community-specific urban furniture designs in Lefkara, Athienou, and Kiti will be put in place to celebrate each area’s distinctive character too.
Continuing the trend of Instagrammable Photo Spots, in 2024 the region introduces a new photo bench with a scenic view in Choirokoitia. Additionally, the ‘Enriching and Greening Larnaka’s Beaches’ programme, will include the upgrade of the seaside park along Pyla’s coastline.
Enhancing Larnaka’s mountain villages
Larnaka’s authentic rural and mountainous villages are part of the region’s charm, and maintaining their traditional character and supporting the communities was at the core of Larnaka Tourism Board’s activities in 2023. In Agios Theodoros, two sculptures were unveiled, symbolising the village’s harmonious blend of mountain and coastal beauty, whilst Lefkara, renowned for its cobbled lanes and stone architecture, saw the restoration of its old village fountain using traditional stone. The popular cycling hub of Tochni also received a vibrant makeover with the installation of five cycle racks adorned with colourful bikes and flower planters.
Revitalising Larnaka’s beekeeping heritage
Three parks were transformed to new bee-themed parks in Melini, Odou and Ora villages; part of the cluster of eight Rural Larnaka Honey Villages that share a sweet beekeeping and honey production history. The parks have bright playground toys; themed urban furniture, and fun educational elements such as bee hotels and factsheets – ideal for a lovely day out for families.
Larnaka’s virtual world expands to appeal to tech-savvy tourists
To attract tech-savvy tourists, the ‘Virtual Larnaka’ series is evolving offering interactive and digital cultural experiences blending tradition with modernity. The demand for virtual attractions has surged, and further developments are planned for 2024. Experiences include:
• Larnaka Virtual Museums – The award-winning Larnaka Virtual Museums platform takes visitors on immersive virtual tours of 15 museums, including new additions, the ‘Local Rural Museum of Kato Drys’, the ‘Ecclesiastical Museum of the Saints Constantine and Helen’ in Tochni, and the ‘Costas Argyrou Museum’ in Mazotos. The museums can be toured at home or on the premises to create a hybrid experience with a ‘digital tour guide’.
• Larnaka 360° Cultural Walk – Revamped in 2023, the 3D virtual guide of Larnaka city now offers an interactive tour of the city centre, parallel promenade, and surrounding areas, showcasing cultural treasures, natural attractions, and archaeological wonders. Visitors can use the guide in preparation for their visit, or whilst touring as a virtual ‘tour guide’.
• 3D Archaeological Reconstructions – The historically accurate virtual reconstruction of archaeological landmarks is another key project, with the latest in the series the virtual reconstruction of the ruins of the Church of the Holy Cross in Tochni village. This brings the historical building back to life based on meticulous studies. This is the third in the series, alongside the Ancient Port of Kition and the Kalavasos-Tenta Archaeological Site.
