The heavy storm in Limassol caused a heap of problems and damages, leading to power outages, road closures, while the Yermasogeia primary school and Foley’s School are expected to remain closed today.
Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou is currently heading to the affected areas.
A tornado struck the Yermasogeia area, causing a crane to fall, trees to be uprooted, and damage to houses. Relevant authorities, including the Mayor of Limassol, Marios Alexandrou, have rushed to the scene for an initial assessment of the damages.
Meanwhile, areas in the Limassol province have been without electricity since 3:20 in the morning due to damages caused by a tornado to the EAC network.
According to EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou, extensive damages to the EAC’s medium and low voltage electrical network have affected areas such as Yermasogeia, Mouttagiaka, Finikaria, Akrounta, parts of Agios Athanasios, parts of Parekklisia, and parts of Akrotiri, which are expected to be restored soon.
She noted numerous uprooted EAC poles, many cut lines, and transformers. She stated that the restoration of electricity will take time due to the dangerous situation.
“The damage is significant, the situation is dangerous, EAC crews have been on the ground from the very beginning, regardless of weather conditions, and are working feverishly for the swiftest possible repair of damages and restoration of electricity,” Ms. Papadopoulou said, urging understanding from the public.
Meanwhile, due to the severe weather conditions during the night, various objects have been swept onto the Limassol-Nicosia highway near Yermasogeia in both directions, and police officers are at the scene urging drivers to be extra cautious.
