Efforts to return to the negotiating table with the aim of reaching a solution on the basis of the UN resolutions, on the occasion of the appointment of the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy and the EU’s contribution to the Cyprus problem, were the main topics of discussion during the meeting between the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, and the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on Tuesday, in the framework of his two-day visit to Cyprus.

According to a post by the House President on platform X, the discussion during the first, as she said, visit by an Italian President since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Italy included the strengthening of the excellent bilateral relations and the close friendship bonds between the peoples of Cyprus and Italy.

She added that this was followed by an exchange of views on the latest developments in the region and how Cyprus and Italy can be pillars of stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean, further strengthening their cooperation on issues of energy, migration, defence, security and culture.

According to Demetriou, issues of parliamentary diplomacy and the work carried out by the Parliaments of Cyprus and Italy were also highlighted, as well as the intensification of raising awareness on the need for citizens to participate in the upcoming European elections, rights and obligations as member states of the European family and the common European perspective.
