The opening and the planned colonalisation of the city of Famagusta not only violates the UN resolutions on Famagusta, which provide for the return of the city to its lawful inhabitants, but even worse, they destroy the prospects of a solution of the Cyprus problem, AKEL MP Giorgos Loukaides stressed in the Political Affairs and Democracy Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
According to a communiqué issued by the Cyprus Parliament, during yesterday’s proceedings of the 1st part of the 2024 session of PACE, Giorgos Loukaides participated in a session of the Assembly’s Political Affairs and Democracy Committee during which the Rapporteur on the topic “Appeal for the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants”, Italian MP Piero Fassino briefed the Committee members on his recent working visit to Athens and his upcoming visit to Ankara.
As the communique points out, G.Loukaides refuted the arguments put forward by a Turkish Cypriot representative from the [nationalist] National Unity Party, in favour of the opening of the enclosed city of Famagusta for development and the demand for a “two state” solution in Cyprus, stating that on the contrary, the opening and the planned colonalisation of the city, not only violate the relevant resolutions of the UN on Famagusta that provide for the return of the town to its lawful inhabitants, but even worse, they bury the prospects of any solution of the Cyprus problem.
The AKEL MP also expressed the hope that Mr. Fassino’s report on Famagusta would be helpful so that the fait accompli that Turkey is imposing in Famagusta can be prevented and the prospect of resuming the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem can be enhanced on the basis of the agreed framework for a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
The members of the Political Affairs and Democracy Committee also approved a second working visit by Mr. Fassino to Cyprus to take stock of the latest developments in relation to the enclosed city of Famagusta.
