The Greek Government warmly welcomes the appointment by the United Nations Secretary-General of María Angela Holguín Cuéllar as the new Personal Envoy for Cyprus.

In a statement, the Greek Foreign Ministry says that the appointment of María Angela Holguín Cuéllar is “an important step in the ongoing efforts, under the guidance of the UN Secretary-General, to resume negotiations with a view to achieving a mutually acceptable, just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, on the agreed basis of the UN Security Council Resolutions, as well as the principles and values of the European Union”.

“We hope that the new UN Envoy will successfully coordinate the effort to find common ground for the resumption of negotiations in this framework”, the Foreign Ministry adds.

Finally, the statement reiterates that Greece “will continue to fully support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General in this direction, in close cooperation and coordination with the Republic of Cyprus and its President Nikos Christodoulides.”
