City of Dreams Mediterranean on Wednesday announced the start of the construction of the Marcos Baghdatis Tennis Academy.

The academy, which will be the centrepiece of the resort’s tennis facilities, is due to open in the second half of the year.

According to a company press release, it will feature 12 tennis courts, including a Championship Court, with the capacity to host international tournaments and sporting events.

“The Academy will help the country’s effort to establish sports tourism as an integral part of its tourism portfolio by hosting international-calibre tournaments and training camps,” the company said.

Under the supervision of the renowned Cypriot tennis player Mr. Marcos Baghdatis, the Academy will offer tennis coaching for players of all levels, from beginner to elite, and help elevate the overall level of tennis in Cyprus by focusing on players’ athletic and academic development.

The Academy’s coaching team will comprise experienced tennis professionals including Ms. Karolina Baghdatis, formerly featured in the top 20 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, and Mr. Baghdatis himself. Classes will be offered to persons of all skill levels, aged 6 and above. As the manager of the academy, Mr. Baghdatis will be available for consultation, while supervising the coaching schedule and development of special training programmes.

During an event hosted to mark the special occasion, Melco Resorts & Entertainment Chairman and CEO Mr. Lawrence Ho described the project as a new chapter for City of Dreams Mediterranean – as one that blends hospitality and entertainment with sport, as he went on to pay tribute to the athlete who helped put the country on the sporting map with his achievements.

“Mr. Baghdatis’ achievements on the court have inspired many young Cypriots, and we are privileged to have him be a guiding force behind the development of future tennis talent. Through the establishment of a world-class tennis academy at City of Dreams Mediterranean, we aim to motivate children and young adults to engage in the sport by offering tennis coaching. We also look forward to offering an outstanding venue for hosting international tournaments that will boost sports tourism in Cyprus and attract further visitors to the island.”

Baghdatis thanked Melco for affording him the opportunity to contribute to the world of tennis in his hometown.

“The Marcos Baghdatis Tennis Academy is not just a facility; it’s a realization of a dream that has been in my heart for a long time. This dream isn’t about leaving a legacy — but about a profound desire to inspire the young generation of tennis enthusiasts in Cyprus. We aim to create an environment where every youth, teenager, or adult, can come, not only to learn and improve their tennis skills but also to enjoy the journey, have fun, and be part of a larger tennis community.”
