An evening celebrating the achievements of some of Enfield’s highest academic achievers took place on 16 November with seventeen of the borough’s secondary schools.

The Enfield High Achievers’ Evening recognises the outstanding work of students selected by their schools for their excellent GCSE results at grade 7, 8 and 9 including high-achieving linguists and those who have excelled in science, maths, engineering and/or design and technology (STEM) subjects.

It was a particularly special evening for the participating schools, given the upheaval in the previous few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Enfield Council’s Vocational and Pathways Enterprise team hosted the event at Winchmore School, N21, at which the Mayor of Enfield handed out certificates of achievement to the young people.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Abdul Abdullahi, said: “Enfield has a wonderful educational environment for children and young people of all backgrounds. Enfield Council supports young people to thrive, prosper and reach their goals and 96 per cent of schools in our borough are rated good or better by Ofsted.

“The Enfield Higher Achievers’ Evening is incredibly special, recognising the results of our best students at GCSE. I would like to warmly congratulate all the young people who collected their awards and also the schools and teaching staff who have guided and supported their pupils. I am sure they will move on to bright and exciting futures in higher education and beyond.”

Following the awards ceremony, the students were invited to take part in workshops and a progression market place with representation from a wide range of universities, employers and professional bodies. Students and parents had the opportunity to meet colleagues from these organisations, discuss opportunities and seek advice. The workshops, aimed at providing advice on obtaining a place at a selective universities, were run by student ambassadors from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Each school was asked to nominate ten students in Year 12 who have performed exceptionally well at GCSE and who could continue their studies at a Russell Group University.
Of the ten students nominated per school, two awards were given by Routes into Languages for students in Year 12 who have performed exceptionally well at a GCSE foreign language or an asset language. There was one STEM Award per school given by Imperial College London for students in Year 12 who have performed exceptionally well at a GCSE in STEM subjects (science, maths, engineering and/or design and technology).
