Holders Liverpool were held to a 2-2 home draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers in a breathless FA Cup third round tie at Anfield on Saturday after Newcastle United were dumped out by third-tier Sheffield Wednesday.

However, Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, West Ham United and Southampton all reached round four.

Newcastle, who sit third in the top flight, fell two goals behind as League One (third-tier) side Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass netted twice in the second half.

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back for Newcastle in the 69th minute when he tapped in from close range after goalkeeper Cameron Dawson kept out Chris Wood’s initial effort from a corner, but it was little more than a consolation.

The world’s oldest football tournament has a reputation for upsets and Nottingham Forest, who made 11 changes from the side that beat Southampton 1-0 in midweek, went out after slumping to a 4-1 defeat at second-tier strugglers Blackpool.

Bournemouth’s torrid run since they returned from the World Cup break continued with a 4-2 loss at home to Championship leaders Burnley, with the Cherries suffering their fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

Meanwhile, fifth-tier Wrexham beat second-tier side Coventry City 4-3 in a thriller to reach the fourth round.

LIVERPOOL REPLAY

Liverpool went behind after goalkeeper Alisson passed the ball straight to Goncalo Guedes who fired home but they levelled as Darwin Nunez volleyed into the net on the stroke of halftime.

Mohamed Salah then made the most of a misdirected Toti header to slot past Matija Sarkic but Wolves substitute Hwang Hee-Chan forced a replay as he slotted through Alisson’s legs.

The visitors thought they had a winner when Toti flicked the ball into the net but his effort was controversially ruled out for an offside spotted by the linesman in the build-up.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane moved to within one goal of the club’s record scorer Jimmy Greaves as his strike in a 1-0 win over Portsmouth took his tally to 265.

“I try to not think about it. Sometimes you can think too much,” Kane said. “I feel in good form and I feel fit. My mindset is to help the team and hopefully the goals will come.”

West Ham substitute Said Benrahma scored with a stunning long-range effort against his former club Brentford to take the visitors into the fourth round with a 1-0 victory.

Leicester City, who won the Cup in 2021, progressed with a 1-0 win at Gillingham who are bottom of the Football League.

Southampton put aside their poor league form to come from behind and beat fellow top-flight side Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park with Adam Armstrong scoring the winner after the visitors had levelled with a James Ward-Prowse free kick.

Manchester City cruised to a 4-0 win at home to Chelsea in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, enjoying their third successive win over Graham Potter’s side in the space of two months.

Elsewhere, League Two (fourth tier) side Stevenage pulled off the shock of the weekend by winning 2-1 at Premier League Aston Villa, scoring two goals in the final few minutes.

Riyad Mahrez whipped in a free kick to put City in front in the 23rd minute, having scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Thursday and in the 2-0 success over Chelsea in the League Cup in November.

Newly-crowned World Cup winner Julian Alvarez doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, the Argentina striker converting a penalty after a VAR review spotted a handball from Kai Havertz.

Phil Foden completed a slick team move involving England team mate Kyle Walker to score City’s third in the 38th minute and effectively ending the game as a contest.

The hosts won another penalty late in the second half and although Alvarez was still on the pitch, Mahrez took the ball and slammed it past Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the 85th minute.

City will play at home in the fourth round against either Premier League leaders Arsenal or League One side Oxford United, who meet on Monday.

It was Chelsea’s sixth defeat in their last nine matches in all competitions and piled more pressure on coach Potter, who succeeded Thomas Tuchel as manager in September.

Chelsea’s visiting fans chanted Tuchel’s name during the match but City manager Pep Guardiola urged the London club to show patience with Potter.

“Give him time. The second half is about what he is. All managers need time and he’s right [for Chelsea],” said Guardiola, who also praised his side for their performance.

“Really good from first minute to the end. We made an incredibly intense game against a top side,” he added.

Potter said City were the last team he could wish to face during the team’s difficult run of form.

“Man City is probably the worst opponent you can play when things aren’t going well because they can make it look like you are not trying,” he said.

STEVENAGE STUN VILLA

Villa took the lead against Stevenage through French midfielder Morgan Sanson in the first half but their afternoon unravelled when Leander Dendoncker was sent off for tripping Stevenage midfielder Dean Campbell, leading to a penalty for the visitors.

Jamie Reid converted the penalty to equalise in the 88th minute and moments later Campbell scored to clinch an unlikely victory for Stevenage, who will visit Stoke City in the fourth round.

Earlier on Sunday, Leeds United staged a late comeback to draw 2-2 at Cardiff City and force a replay. The Championship (second-tier) side got off to a flying start thanks to first-half goals from Jaden Philogene and Sheyi Ojo.

But Leeds, who have pulled off their share of thrilling comebacks under Jesse Marsch, levelled in added time with a strike from 18-year-old forward Sonny Perkins, who had only been on the pitch for six minutes, after Rodrigo Moreno had reduced the deficit in the second half.

Walsall beat Stockport County 2-1, Stoke City won 3-0 at Hartlepool, Blackburn Rovers beat Norwich City 1-0 and Derby County beat Barnsley 3-0 to also make it to the fourth round. Bristol City and Swansea City will meet again in a replay after drawing 1-1.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes Eddie Nketiah is getting better and better after helping the Gunners set up an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Manchester City by beating Oxford United at Kassam Stadium.

Nketiah scored twice in six second-half minutes after Mohamed Elneny’s opener to secure the Gunners’ progression.

It is now five goals in his last six games for Nketiah, who has stepped up in the absence of injured striker Gabriel Jesus.

“He showed great composure,” said Arteta. “He’s a great finisher, with the timing of his runs as well.

“He showed his quality and his work-rate is getting better and better. I’m really happy with him.

“We have only one [striker] and to go many months before Gaby is back it’s not easy, but we have to get the most out of the players that we have at the moment.”

The Premier League leaders were frustrated in the first half by a well-organised and disciplined Oxford side before eventually overpowering their League One opponents.

Fabio Vieira was Arsenal’s creator-in-chief, sending in a perfect free-kick for Elneny to head past Oxford goalkeeper Eddie McGinty in the 63rd minute before playing a perfect pass for Nketiah to finish calmly finish seven minutes later.

Oxford, who had battled so hard, were now struggling to cope with Arsenal’s attacking threat and Nketiah was on the mark again after 76 minutes with a delicate chip over McGinty from Gabriel Martinelli’s pass to confirm that powerhouse meeting with City at Etihad Stadium.
