Andreas Mavroyiannis holds election campaign event in London

Andreas Mavroyiannis, independent candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, was in London on Monday night where he spoke at an election campaign event at the Cypriot Community Centre in Wood Green.
Addressing an audience of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, he said that the partition of Cyprus is “close” if the solution of the bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality is not pursued and achieved.
He added that the country is “on the verge of the cliff” and the division is “just around the corner,” referring to the developments in the occupied territories.
Mavroyiannis stressed that if elected, he wants to achieve “a great progressive change” in governance and the living conditions of Cypriots.
On Tuesday morning, the Presidential candidate had a meeting with high-ranking officials of the Cyprus desk in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, where he exchanged views and ideas on how to restart the negotiations on Cyprus, stressing the important role that the UK has to play to that effect.
He said that a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality within the framework of the UN resolutions is the only way forward.
Mr Mavroyiannis also visited the Houses of Parliament where the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK was hosting a Cyprus Information Day on the unacceptable anniversary of the illegal unilateral declaration of independence. MPs had the opportunity to review their pledge and support for the resumption of talks for the unification of Cyprus.
He congratulated the President of the Federation, Mr Christos Karaolis, for the hard work and lobbying that the Federation does in keeping alive the Cyprus issue in Britain, a country that can have a great influence in finding a just and viable solution to our problem.
Mr Mavroyiannis met very briefly with Sir Roger Gale MP (Chair of Cyprus APPG), Theresa Villiers MP (Vice-Chair of Cyprus APPG), Bambos Charalambous MP (Vice-Chair of Cyprus APPG and Shadow Middle East Minister), Stephen Doughty MP (Shadow Europe Minister) and Catherine West MP (Shadow Asia & the Pacific Minister).
Moreover, in a statement on the occasion of the anniversary of the UDI of the pseudo state, the Presidential candidate said that the occupation administration which Turkey has illegally established in the occupied areas of Cyprus, cannot oppose for a long period of time to the dynamic for the reunification of Cyprus “that we will create.”
Later in the day, Mr Mavroyiannis had a working lunch with Labour MPs Niall Coyle, Catherine West, Stephen Doughty, Matt Rhoden, Bambos Charalambous, Feryal Clark, Janet Dabey and Kate Osamor, in the Houses of Parliament.
He said they had a fruitful discussion on what needs to be done to kick start negotiations to unite Cyprus. The economy, the environment, education and the youth were also discussed and the meeting was concluded with Mr Mavroyiannis replying to various questions.
