26 years after its release, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You has finally made it to No1 in the UK. What’s more, it’s the first holiday song to top both the US-based Hot 100 and the Official UK Singles Chart; first released on Mariah’s 1994 Merry Christmas album, the festive hit officially topped the UK charts on Sunday and on Monday, Billboard announced the track had returned to the top of the US singles chart.

Mariah, 50, tweeted her excitement and thanked her fans: “WOW! I truly wasn’t expecting this at all!! Eternally grateful for the enduring success of this song. I don’t want a lot for Christmas…just wishing for a bit more JOY and some holiday spirit for all, especially this year. Merry Christmas! Love, MC.”

The single reaches the summit in its 104th week. According to the Official Charts Company, no other song in history has spent as many weeks in the UK Top 40 before eventually reaching No1.

Another favourite that makes an annual journey up the UK chart but has never reached the top is Wham!’s 1984 hit Last Christmas. This week, it’s at No2, agonizingly-close to creating its own piece of history. Here’s keeping our fingers crossed!
