Cyprus begins Sunday the first inoculations against COVID-19 after the first vaccines of Pfizer-BioNTech arrived yesterday on the island.

The first to be vaccinated are citizens at a Care Home in Nicosia and doctors and nurses at the Famagusta Reference Hospital.

Receiving the first batches of the vaccines, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou spoke of a milestone in the EU and global efforts to end the pandemic.

EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, a Cyprus national herself, spoke of the virtues of solidarity, unity and cooperation.

The first doctor to get the shot today is Dr Christos Kypri at the Famagusta Reference Hospital. He said that the vaccines are a medicinal miracle and bring hope in the hard efforts to contain the virus.
