Nothing ceases to amaze me about the Tories and their propaganda and half-truths that they are spreading to electorate in the run-up to the general election. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to clarify some matters will real facts.
In the London Borough of Enfield, the local Tories and their cronies are distributing a crime leaflet in the area claiming if elected, they will put 20,000 police officers back on the beat and re-open disused police stations. In addition, they claim they will put 250 extra police officers in the borough alone.
All this is beggar’s belief and I would like to rebut the Tories propaganda based on lies. The fact of the matter is that since 2010, over 21,000 police officers across the country have been made redundant due to the Tories austerity measures. In addition, since 2010, under a Tory controlled government, police stations in the borough have been closed by their savage cuts to the police budget. These police stations include Winchmore Hill, Southgate, Enfield Town, and Wood Green to name a few, and they have the incredible cheek to claim if they are re-elected they are going to re-open them after they closed them in the first place.
Unfortunately, violent crime in London, especially knife related incidents, have risen to nearly 400% since 2010. This uncontrollable London crime wave is the fault of the Tory government. In North London alone there has been a surge of muggings, violent assault and pick pocketing in recent years.
The victims tend to be the most vulnerable including the elderly, school children and pregnant mothers. Most crimes are perpetrated on London buses, on the train services and on the high street. Because of the Tory closures of police stations across the country, existing police stations are overloaded with paperwork and cases. For instance, if you are a victim of a crime in Oakwood, the nearest police station to report the crime is Edmonton which is a considerable distance for many.
Crime numbers will more than double under the Tories.
Enfield and Haringey share the small number available of police officers. What the Tories and their cronies won’t tell you is that the prison cells are filled to capacity and some crimes are left unpunished. For example, a notorious mugger in the Palmers Green area who robbed more than a dozen people using a knife, was spared from jail because he agreed that he will undertake further education courses in carpentry. There is something fundamentally wrong with the criminal justice system.
The Tories are allowing some criminals off the hook and allowed the privatisation of the running of the prison service. This is wrong and shame on the Tories on preaching to us about how they will tackle crime.
A Labour government will bring law order across the country. Labour have made it clear that if elected they will build more prisons to lock up criminals instead of giving them a free pass. If elected, we will re-open police stations that haven’t been sold off to developers in order to be converted into luxury flats. We will restore 10,000 police officers back on the streets of London. Above all, we will launch a war on the causes of crime by targeting drug dealers and re-opening drug rehabilitation centres.
However, the problem is that none of this can be achieved without a Labour majority government. The Tories need to win just 9 more seats in parliament and they are targeting Enfield-Southgate in particular. Our compatriot Bambos Charalambous MP is on the firing line and the Tories and crony supporters are doing their very best to have him de-seated from Westminster. We cannot allow this to happen and urge all of you, and especially to those who have been victims of crime in the last 10 years, to vote decisively and to vote Labour.
