“Dialogos” portal, 7th October 2019
The General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou stated that we must all seek the resumption of negotiations aiming at the solution of the Cyprus problem.

In statements made at Larnaca Airport, Mr. Kyprianou said he was going to Brussels where “we will organize an event on the Cyprus problem and the latest developments, on Turkey’s recent provocative actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus and Famagusta, as well as on the need for a resumption of substantive negotiations so that we can resolve the Cyprus problem and put an end to all these provocative actions of Turkey.”

On this occasion, he continued, “we will have meetings with leaders of Political Groups in the European Parliament, as well as with European Commissioners so that we can convey Cyprus’ messages to Brussels”.
The General Secretary of AKEL was asked whether he thought meaningful negotiations would resume, following US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo’s statements and the expected trilateral meeting between President Anastasiades, Mustafa Akinci and the UN Secretary-General. He said “for sure no” added that “all the statements made lately are positive, but they don’t however solve the problem in any way, and we must understand that.”

A.Kyprianou said that “the trilateral meeting is moving in the right direction and the informal conference seems to be scheduled for December. However, what we are interested in is the resumption of negotiations that will be aiming at resolving the Cyprus problem, and that is precisely where everyone should be aiming for.”
If and provided that, he noted, “the negotiations resume and if and provided that the President of the Republic moves in the correct direction, we will back the effort because we are patriots and above all interested in reunifying our country and terminating Turkey’s provocative actions».

Called upon to comment on the meetings Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will have today in Cyprus, Mr. Kyprianou expressed the view that “it will be useful for the Cypriot Government to be briefed about what has been exchanged between Mr. Dendias and Mr. Pompeo. Preparations should be made for the Council meeting of Foreign Ministers in Brussels”. He went on to say that “These are all good,” adding that “what matters however is to find a way to deal with the situation as it has evolved.”

Furthermore, the General Secretary of AKEL said that “we have own view. We have expressed it and all through the recent period. I hope and wish the President when he will take decisions will take our views into account.”
