Since Kyriacos Georgiou moved from London to Athens to pursue his dream of becoming a successful recording artist, many great things have happened. He’s released chart topping singles, collaborated with some of the biggest names in Greece, including an appearance at the Cypriot Wine Festival alongside Konstantinos Argiros, has toured the US, and is now in the studio recording his new single.

I caught up with Kyriacos during his recent visit to London to talk about his performances this winter season and exciting plans in the pipeline.

Kyriacos, tell us how the collaboration with Natasa Theodoridou, Petros Iacovides and Stan at Vogue club in Thessaloniki came about.

I was originally booked as the opening act for a concert Natasa and Petro were giving in Tel Aviv. It went so well that I was offered the opportunity to continue the collaboration at Vogue alongside Natasa, Petro and Stan. The season kicked off in October and we were due to close at the beginning of January but because the show is doing so well, it’s been extended for another three weeks.

In May this year, you were support act for Konstantinos Argiros at the Cypriot Wine Festival. How was the experience for you and what’s special about performing for the community here?

Performing at the biggest community event in the UK, alongside one of the hottest names in Greece, was absolutely amazing. I would attend the Cypriot Wine Festival every year myself as a child and to now be performing there as an artist is indescribable. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to see family and friends as well as meet fans and supporters.

You’ve recorded two duets with Bulgarian star Anelia. How did this project come about?

In 2016, I was performing alongside Despina Vandi and the late Pantelis Pantelides in Thessaloniki. When the season came to an end, I joined Despina on tour. Anelia, who has recorded many of Vandi’s songs in Bulgarian throughout her 20 year career, happened to be at the concert in Sofia and after seeing me perform, expressed an interest in recording a duet. She got in touch with my management and soon after came the release of Pos Tin Ides, recorded in Greek and Bulgarian. The song became a massive hit and opened up a huge market for me in Bulgaria. I now perform there twice, sometimes three times a month, to not only Greek students, but to the locals who absolutely love Greek music.

Our latest duet, Trelenomai, is doing very well, having received 1 million views within a week of its release.

Which is your preferred style of music?

My preference often depends on how I feel and my mood at any particular time but I would say upbeat is my favourite – it’s the style that makes people want to get up on the dance floor and have a good time.

Which songwriters and composers have you worked with?

I’ve worked with Giorgos Papadopoulos who wrote two songs for me, Jackpot who I recorded Sto Poto Mou Rixe Stahti with, and Sofia Pechlivani from here in London who has just had a song she composed, Dikaiologies, released by Konstantinos Argiros.

You toured America last year – tell us about the experience.

I performed on a cruise ship for 500 Greek Americans. They are crazy for Greek music, full of energy and know how to create a buzz! We toured the Caribbean islands, Miami, New York and Florida.

Your work obviously means you are absent from home for long periods of time.

I do miss home but thanks to technology these days, I’m always in contact with friends and family. I try to visit London at least once a month, even if only for a couple of days.

You’ve always said it was your father who influenced your decision to take up a singing career. Any regrets? Is there a downside to the music industry?

There are many hoops you have to jump through to get to where you want to be and many obstacles along the way. People will say things about you and every day you’ll wake up to something new, however, all that aside, I enjoy my job, I love my job and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

What can we expect from you in 2019?

From February 2019, through to April, I will be continuing my collaboration with Natasa, Petro and Stan, this time in Athens. And I’m extremely happy to announce that Petros Iacovides and Stan will be writing my new single which will be released in the New Year.

And finally, how will you be spending Christmas?

I will actually be working on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the same over New Year! I had booked a 15 day break in the Caribbean with a large group of family and friends, but unfortunately, due to work commitments, they’ll all be going without me!

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your support and wish the community a very Merry Christmas. Hronia polla!
