Europa League, two Cypriot teams through to group stage
A major win for Cypriot team Apollon to progress to the group stages after a massive win over two legs over Swiss team FC Basel.
They trailed 3-2 away to Basel but Apollon scored in the 53rd minute with Charalambos Kyriacou to win 1-0 to go through on away goals.
AEK Larnaca also went through beating Slovakian team Trentse 3-0 to win 4-1 On aggregate after they drew 1-1 away from home. They scored in the first minute with Apostolis Yiannou, Acoran made it 2-0 and Apostolis Giannou scored a second in the 63rd minute to make it 3-0.
AEK now go into the Europa group stages for the second time in their history.
Apoel have not done at all well in European competition this year losing out to Kazakstan team Astana who they beat 1-0 at home but then lost 1-0 away to Astana with a penalty scored by a Enriqie penalty in the 17th minute as result it went into penalties which Astana won.
Burnley’s European adventure ended on Thursday at the hands of Greek team Olympiakos Piraeus as the Premier League side failed to make the Europa League group stage but manager Sean Dyche said it was a valuable experience for the club.
The Clarets trailed 3-1 from the away leg of the tie and a 1-1 draw meant a 4-2 aggregate defeat for the Lancashire side.
