The European Commission’s report on the health system in Cyprus accurately reflects the tragic reality Cypriot citizens and patients are harshly experiencing.

That Cyprus registers three times less public spending on health than the European average, 50% on private spending – the highest in Europe and no health prevention policies reconfirms in general the fact that this fundamental social right is increasingly becoming a privilege for those have money.

This dramatic picture is largely the result of Anastasiades’ government, which, instead of increasing spending, has deprived over 400 million Euros from the public health sector, thus leading it to the brink of total collapse.

We reiterate that the health system in our country will be able to serve all people, and not just the privileged few, only through the substantial upgrading of the public health sector and cooperation with the private sector within the context of a National Health Scheme based on the principle of solidarity. Only the next government under Stavros Mala can thus secure this.
