The House of Representatives expressed on Friday its deep concern over the rise of the far right, neofascism and racism in Europe through a resolution which it adopted by majority.

The resolution was adopted by 37 votes for and 2 against cast by the two MPs belonging to the National Popular Front (ELAM).

It refers to the rise of far-rights, neo-Nazi and nationalist parties in EU member states and it calls on the authorities to monitor the ongoing trial of Golden Dawn senior members in Greece and to determine whether any criminal offences have been committed by the organisation in Cyprus.

It further reiterates the Parliament’s commitment to freedom, democracy, respect of the human rights of all citizens but also to terminating the Turkish occupation and putting an end to the division of Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks commenced at the Swiss resort of Crans – Montana on June 28, but in the early hours of July 7, it was announced that the Conference on Cyprus ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.

The draft resolution was tabled by left wing AKEL.

The Cypriot Parliament “strongly condemns the existence and action of neo-fascist and neo-Nazi movements in Europe” considering them “an affront to the history of the continent and the millions of victims of the 2nd World War.”

MPs from all parliamentary parties apart from ELAM, spoke of the need for European principles and values to prevail and expressed their position for deepening democracy while at the same time recalling that Europe continues to exist today because during the 2nd World War everyone came together to defeat Nazism
