Russia’s Ambassador to Nicosia Stanislav Osadchiy has expressed the position that it is difficult to find a just solution to the Cyprus problem outside of the parameters of the United Nations.

Asked to comment on Turkey`s position that a solution to the Cyprus problem should be sought from now on outside of the parameters of the United Nations, Russian Ambassador said that he heard of this position, noting at the same time that “it is difficult to find a just solution outside the parameters of the United Nations”.

Osadchiy said that “we will see what will happen” adding that Russia insists that efforts and negotiations towards a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem should continue within the context and the parameters of the United Nations.

“I hope both sides want this and that this will happen,” he noted.

He went on to say that “as you know, Russia supports the position that Cyprus must be a united state without foreign troops and rights of intervention”.

Ambassador also expressed his disappointment over the outcome of the Cyprus conference in Crans Montana, adding that the positions on both sides are more than obvious.

Stanislav Osadchiy was speaking to the press after a meeting held here today with the Secretary General of AKEL party Andros Kyrpianou, whom he thanked for the briefing on the developments in the Cyprus problem following the Conference on Cyprus in the swiss resort.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern part. UN-backed talks that took place on June 28-July 7, in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended inconclusively. Peace talks aim to reunite Cyprus under a federal roof.
