Owners Dino, George and Sid Papas took co-presenter and chef Tom Kerridge behind the counter at the Great Gutter Lane restaurant, giving him and TV viewers an insight into how their award-winning food is fried.
The competing chefs took part in a number of challenges, with the Papas family winning the quick-fire speed round, where they had to sell quality orders from a pop-up stall.
And despite falling short in a fish knowledge quiz, the boys later redeemed themselves in an innovation cooking round, which saw them take first prize.
The Papas family watched the show live at the Willerby premises with special guests including John Prescott. And the result means the people of Hull can look forward to 1p fish and chips on March 28th tomorrow.
Before the show, Dino told the Mail: “The whole process started about six or seven months ago. The BBC were sending secret diners out all over the country, and some of them spoke to us.
“We had no idea who they were until the BBC rang us up later and said it was a competition and we were part of it.
“We’re very nervous about watching it back. I’ve seen the advert for it and I’m embarrassed! I think I look much nicer in person than on the telly.
“We’re absolutely honoured that our fish and chips have been commended so highly.
“The two places we were competing against were both from the south, so we felt that all of Yorkshire was on our shoulders. But that makes us very proud.”
“If we win we’ll be doing 1p fish and chips for the day on March 28. We hoped to do it for free, but we’ve been told we have to put a value on it, so that’s what we’re going to do.”
