The US Ambassador in Cyprus Kathleen Ann Doherty has expressed her countries readiness to support the implementation of a solution in Cyprus problem that will be agreed between the two sides.

Doherty met on Wednesday with the President of the House and Acting President of the Republic Yiannakis Omirou, who stressed the need to abolish the anachronistic guarantees and the need to exert pressure on Turkey.

According to an official announcement, Omirou said that the solution should be consistent with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, the High Level Agreements of 1977 – 1979, the principles and values of the European Union and should fully respect the human rights.

Omirou also referred to the need to abolish the anachronistic guarantees, which Turkey supports and stressed the need to exert pressure on Turkey to contribute significantly to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Doherty stressed that her country is ready to support the implementation of the solution, which will be agreed by the two sides in the negotiations.

She referred to the positive steps made by the economy of Cyprus and added that the Embassy is making efforts to inform the private sector in the US for the multiple investment opportunities in Cyprus due to the island`s strategic position.

Finally, both expressed their mutual desire to further strengthen the interparliamentary relations between Cyprus and the United States.
