The International and European Community are called to turn to Turkey and especially the EU should clearly and categorically call on Turkey to end the occupation of EU territory of Cyprus and assent to a solution based on the principles of international and European law, President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou said in his New Year Message.
Turkey`s refusal to comply with this call should lead to the final termination of its EU accession courseā€, he added.

He said that 2015 was marked by the escalation of the global financial crisis and our people were called to shoulder a heavy burden in addressing the consequences of the crisis.

In the message, the House Speaker said that the lawlessness of the markets, the uncontrolled activities of financial institutions and without conditions and limits globalization of economies is the source of the deep crisis we are experiencing.

“The social market economy with the government supervision and regulatory mechanisms is the only way to exit from the crisis and form the conditions for the recovery of the global economy, growth and social cohesion”, Omirou noted.

He also stressed that “the Cyprus economy is still going through difficult times and the society continues to suffer. There is an urgent need to return to sustainable growth with investments, job creation and social cohesion. ”

The Speaker noted that the struggle to end the Turkish occupation and restore human rights and fundamental freedoms of our people remains our top priority.

He also sent wishes of progress, growth, prosperity and social cohesion to the people of Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, resumed last May.
