While most people were enjoying a post-Christmas day lie in, on Sunday 27th December, 24 coaches and managers from community football club Omonia Youth arrived at the Radiomarathon centre in Enfield to play in their annual Christmas match.

After Christmas wishes were exchanged, Omonia Youth FC chairman Elias Constanti and vice chairman Kyri Georgiou named the teams.

Both teams took their place on the field and with a blow of her whistle, referee Mary Kizas got the game under way.

In a committed encounter with both teams eager to come out on top, it was miraculously 0-0 at the break with the chairman’s team spurning several clear-cut opportunities. Early in the second half Under 11 Green manager Nick Lingis deservedly opened the scoring for the chairman’s team. With the match heading to its conclusion, Under 11 White manager Michael Pieri equalised with two minutes to go.

With all expecting the match to end in a draw, the chairman’s team won a corner just as the referee’s watch bleeped for the end of the game. Moments later, after a penalty box scramble, Lingis scored again. It proved to be the winner as there was no time for the restart.

A thoroughly enjoyable and tiring match ended with a few well-deserved drinks.

Thanks go to chairman Elia Constanti, vice chairman Kyri Georgiou for organising the match; to the managers and coaches who participated and to referee Mary Kizas for officiating.

The day was another example of the community spirit of the club; the camaraderie among all the managers and dedication to ensure the club is seen as a positive influence within the community
