Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn, who is paying an official two-day visit to Cyprus, discussed on Tuesday the Cyprus problem and the Luxembourg EU Presidency.

 

Their meeting at the Presidential Palace, in the presence of delegations of the two countries, lasted for about an hour. Anstasiades said in a post on his twitter account that they discussed about the Cyprus problem and the Luxembourg Presidency of  the Council of the EU which wraps up on December 31, 2015.

 

An official press release issued on Monday in Luxembourg said that Asselborn`s meetings in Cyprus will first of all help to review developments as regards the bilateral relations of Luxembourg and Cyprus, as well as the Cyprus problem. It also noted that the Foreign Minister of Luxembourg will discuss during his meetings international and regional developments, particularly as regards the Near and the Middle East.

 

Asselborn also met on Tuesday with the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim and attended official talks at the Foreign Ministry of delegations of the two countries, presided by their Foreign Ministers

 

After that Asselborn and his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides will make statements to the press. Later on Asselborn will attend a working lunch hosted by Kasoulides.

 

On Wednesday, Asselborn will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, and will visit the buffer zone in Nicosia.

 

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May this year with a view to reunited the island under a federal roof.
