The statements made yesterday by T /c leader Mustafa Akinci during a televised press conference were “extremely revealing of the intentions of the Turkish side,” House Speaker Yiannakis Omirou said.

In a statement he made on Wednesday, following a meeting he had with Greek Deputy Defense Minister, Omirou said that the Turkish side insists on legalizing the results of the 1974 Turkish invasion, insists on majority on properties and population, legalization of colonization, continuation of guarantees and rotating presidency.

According to House President, it comes as a surprise the fact that the government expresses optimism and speaks of progress in the negotiations, when the T/c leader makes such intransigent and hostile statements.

Omirou said that the time of truth has come and it is high time that the President took the responsibility to brief the people about the reality.

One must ask whether these are the positions Akinci places on the table of the negotiations and what is the response of the Greek Cypriot side, House President said.

He pointed out that the President must make a statement otherwise anyone would think that we tolerate these `wildly intransigent positions `expressed by the T / C leader.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed negotiations between the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and T/c leader Mustafa Akinci are underway with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
