| A resident who was caught flytipping a van load of household rubbish on The Ridgeway in Enfield was ordered to pay fines and costs of £2,244 after he was prosecuted by Enfield Council. Kleanthis Symeou, Winchmore Hill, pleaded guilty at Tottenham Magistrates Court on 19 November to flytipping some building waste that he should have paid £100 to dispose of legally.
The offence occurred on 9 July 2014 and was only stopped when two passing drivers spotted Symeou as he began dumping the waste and called police. He was arrested and his details passed to Enfield Council’s Environmental Protection Team for prosecution contrary to Section 33(1)(a) Environmental Protection Act 1990. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said “Flytipping is a serious and incredibly anti-social offence which costs the council hundreds of thousands of pounds to clear every year. “Mr Symeou admitted that dumping this waste was a way to avoid paying for its proper disposal and, should he not have been caught, would have led to a disgraceful mess being left on the roadside, which would had to be have been cleared at the taxpayer’s expense. “Enfield Council provides numerous easy ways to legally get rid of rubbish, there is our doorstep collection service and also our Civic Amenity Site. So let this be a warning to anyone who thinks they can get away with flytipping in Enfield – they had better think again!”
