Cyprus will be able to adequately monitor its airspace and maritime area, Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides said on Saturday, adding that this is being enhanced by state budget provisions.

Foikaides was speaking after paying a visit to the Hellenic Navy fast attack craft “Lieutenant Roussen”, that docks at Limassol harbor.

“This year`s budget provides for designated needs, concerning the commission of the necessary means, in order for Cyprus to be able to adequately control and monitor its maritime area and its airspace,” the Minister noted.

He did not give further details, but reiterated that the 2015 budget contains relevant provisions.

Fokaides also noted the continuous presence of Greek Navy ships in the area “without great fanfare” and said that “coupling” Greek and Cypriot defence capabilities was a sine qua non for confronting any threat.
