A teacher from Paphos is in police custody after being arrested on Monday on suspicion of possessing and distributing pornography involving young children.

The 32-year-old suspect, said to be a computer teacher at a secondary school in the town, is set to be taken before a Paphos Magistrate on Tuesday where CID investigators will request that they keep him in remand for further days as investigations continue.
According to police investigators, the suspect had been attempting to groom a 14-year-old pupil through a social media website and had even sent him naked pictures of himself. A complaint was filed to police by the pupil’s mother.

When the computer of the suspect was seized by investigators, they reportedly discovered pornographic material on his hard drive involving minors.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou has stated that a total of 43 presidential pardons will take place for inmates at the Nicosia Central Prisons this Christmas.

The pardons were handed to inmates following consultations from President Nicos Anastasiades, Attorney General Costas Klerides and Deputy Attorney General Rikkos Erotokritou. Out of the 43 presidential pardons, 15 are non-Cypriot nationals while there was no presidential pardon for the recently jailed former Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou because he “had not served enough jail time to warrant a pardon” despite media reports that he had made a special request to President Anastasiades.
