It is necessary for the basic principles of the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement to become clear and then discuss for Cyprus’ reunification, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday.

Anastasiades expressed hope that there will be a change in the “messages sent to us through the statements by Turkish Foreign Minister during his illegal visit yesterday to our occupied homeland.”

“We hoped that there would be some signs of hope, but I regret to say that what has been broadcasted by the media has exhausted our patience and good will,” he noted.

Turkish FM Ahmet Davutoglu argued that a joint declaration between the two communities was not as important as the two leaders having the political will to solve this conflict. Furthermore he spoke about a bizonal settlement, “on the basis of an understanding of the sovereignty of the two component states.”

The Greek Cypriot side insists that there must be an agreement between the two communities on a joint declaration before the resumption of the talks for a settlement in Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
