Cyprus Defence Minister Photis Photiou briefed on Thursday the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Amanda Sloat, on developments in the country’s economy, the Cyprus issue and hydrocarbon reserves.

According to an official announcement, Sloat, who is visiting Cyprus discussed with Photiou security and defence matters, while reaffirming friendly and constructive relations between the two countries.

The Cypriot Minister said that hydrocarbon reserves, discovered in the Republic’s exclusive economic zone, need to be exploited for the benefit of the people and to enhance peace and stability in the region.

He expressed his wish, hydrocarbons to become an incentive for a Cyprus solution.

The Minister added moreover that Cyprus will continue to exercise its sovereign rights, in accordance to international law and despite Turkey’s threats.

He referred to provocative acts of the Turkish side, such as the sailing of the research vessel “Barabaros”, within the country’s territorial waters.

Photiou also briefed Sloat about the intention of Nicosia to apply for membership in the “Partnership for Peace” program, asking for US support.
