A 51-year-old Greek Cypriot man was arrested on Monday in connection with a shooting outside a primary school in Faneromeni Avenue.
The incident was not connected to the school.
According to police, the suspect was apprehended at around 12.45pm after he allegedly shot a 30-year-old Israeli man in the backside with a hunting shotgun.
In his statement to the police immediately after the incident, the suspect said he had earlier seen the victim steal his mobile phone from the passenger seat of his unlocked car.
He claims he got the shotgun from the boot of his car and then followed the Israeli man, who was walking with a friend, until they passed the primary school and opened fire.
Panic ensued after the shooting until police arrived and placed the suspect under arrest. The street remained cordoned off for several hours while a number of parents arrived at the school to take their children home early out of concern for their safety.
The victim was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and is now said to be in a stable condition.
On Tuesday the suspect is expected to be brought before Larnaca District Court for a remand hearing.
