The Republic of Cyprus has sent humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees who have fled to Jordan, in response to a plea by Jordan’s King Abdullah ΙΙ to President of the Republic Demetris Christofias during the latter’s visit to Jordan last September.

According to an official statement, on 13th September 210 tonnes of bottled water were sent to The Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organization to be distributed to Syrian refugees at the Zaatari refugee camp.

On 18 December, Cyprus’ Embassy in Amman sent a 20 thousand euro cheque to UNFICEF Representative in the country Dominique Isabelle Hyde for the construction of a children’s playground at the school which is operating at the camp.

Ambassador to Jordan, Charalambos Hadzisavvas said that Cyprus, which is suffering from refugee problems since the 1974 Turkish invasion, is very sensitive to this issue and responded to this international effort promptly. He also said that Cyprus will continue contributing to the extent possible
