More than 40 people were arrested in Larnaca on Friday when police raided two premises as part of a clampdown on gambling. Police confiscated some 10,000 euros, gambling chips, playing cards and tables. Larnaca police spokesman Christos Andreou said the raids were carried out between 19.00 and midnight on Friday, the first in Aradippou where nine people were apprehended gambling. A 10th person who was in charge of the establishment was also arrested. Some 5,870 euros, 1,000 of which was hidden in the electricity meter and a large number of chips, playing cards and four tables were confiscated. The 10 people were taken to Aradippou police station where they were charged and released to appear in court later. That same evening, police obtained a search warrant and searched premises in Larnaca were 32 people were caught gambling. They were arrested, charged and released, as was a 52 year old who was in charge of the establishment. A total of 3,487 euros, 3,000 chips and 200 playing cards and eight tables were confiscated. Christou said police would be stepping up their camapighn against gambling during the holidays.
