Drivers employed at Limassol’s urban bus company EMEL will embark on an indefinite strike from Friday, it was announced yesterday.
According to EMEL, the company will not be able to pay its employees this month. In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, OMEPEGE SEK Limassol Organisational Secretary Yiannis Tsouris said that the company had on Thursday afternoon announced that it would not be able to pay its employees 100% of their salaries due to ongoing financial difficulties.
Tsouris said that bus drivers paid on a weekly basis would get only 50% of their salaries while those paid a monthly salary would get 60%. This was something that PEO and SEK worker unions could not accept, he said.
Tsouris added that this was the fourth time this year that EMEL drivers had been affected by pay issues and that following a 24-hour strike in September, had decided that they would carry out an indefinite work stoppage the next time.
The drivers are expected to congregate at the Old Limassol Hospital bus station tomorrow. Tsouris asked for the public’s understanding on the matter.
