Murderer of two brothers charged with 31 years jail
Christopher Angelo Filippou has been charged with 31 years in jail for shooting brothers Sam and Luke Willis in Newcastle in Australia June last year
The shooting was the result of a neighbourhood dispute and the court heard Filippou shot the brothers with no warning and no chance to escape.
Sam Willis, 22, and Luke Willis, 28, were shot at point blank range using a pistol linked to an armoured van robbery in Sydney in the 1970s.
Acting Justice Jane Matthews said their lives were cut short by an “inherently angry man” who had shown no remorse.
“I think it is likely the offender brought the firearm to the confrontation, however I cannot be satisfied of that matter beyond reasonable doubt,” Justice Matthews said.
The court was told Filippou was no stranger to the justice system.
He had been jailed as a teenager for robbery and drug offences and assaulted another neighbour in 1999.
Filippou turned himself in to the police after the murder of the Willis brothers.
He will be eligible for parole in 2035, when he is nearly 80 years old.
