AEK had to wait for three years and nine months to climb back to the top spot of the Super League table, even if that is having played three more games than its title rivals.

On Saturday the Yellows defeated Panetolikos 2-0 at Agrinio to go two points ahead of Panathinaikos and four ahead of Olympiakos, who are playing on Sunday.

AEK’s Cameroonian striker Steve Beleck was twice on target at Agrinio, first at the 21st minute through a left-foot shot after a good team effort and then at the first minute of injury time from close range.

Panetolikos ended the game with 10 men as substitute Habib Bamogo was shown a red card 11 minutes from time.

This was AEK’s third win within one week, after victories at home over Asteras Tripolis and Levadiakos, taking it to 22 points from 11 games.

Also on Saturday PAOK dropped two points at home against Kerkyra, while Ergotelis downed visiting PAS Yiannina.

In Thessaloniki, PAOK stayed fifth after drawing 0-0 with visiting Kerkyra to reach up to 15 points from 11 games. Kerkyra collected only its sixth point from nine games, the league’s worst record.

Ergotelis scored one goal in each half to beat PAS Yiannina 2-1. Michalis Frangoulakis opened the scoring at the 15th minute, PAS’s Ilias Kotsios made it 2-0 through an own goal at the 63rd and Ibrahima Bakayoko cut the deficit for the Ioannina side 10 minutes from the end through a penalty.

Ergotelis was left with 10 due to the second yellow card for Giorgos Sarris at the 83rd.
