UN Secretary General Ban Ki – moon will most probably submit his report on his good offices in Cyprus after the meeting he will hold in June with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, diplomatic sources have stated.

According to the same sources, no final decision has been taken yet, but the Secretary General wishes to submit a report that will include as many detailed references as possible on the ongoing UN – backed Cyprus talks, as well as the decisions the two leaders are expected to take during their meeting with him.

The meeting is expected to take place in New York on the 20th or the 23rd of June, the diplomatic sources stated.

If his decision becomes final, the UNSG will submit two reports, one on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) by the 31st of May and the other regarding his good offices mission by the end of June.

As regards the UNFICYP report, the same sources said that it would be “a technical one”, will not include any “surprises” and would include some references on the course of the Cyprus talks and the decision of the UNSG to meet with the two leaders after the Turkish elections in June.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. UN – backed talks are currently underway between Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country.
