One in every four adults in Cyprus suffers from hypertension, while the disease is estimated to cause the death to seven million people worldwide annually.

These figures were released during a Press Conference on the occasion of the World Hypertension Day and the beginning next Saturday of a Campaign titled “Learn your blood pressure – Protect your life”.

According to the figures, release on Wednesday, in Cyprus more than 150 thousand people have been diagnosed with hypertension, while a percentage of 40% of the patients is not aware that it suffers from hypertension.

President of the Cyprus Society of Hypertension Philippos Stylianou stressed that the right prevention, diagnosis and treatment of that serious disease can decrease the risk of a stroke by 40%, of coronary heart disease by 25% and of a heart failure by 50%.

President of the Cyprus Society of Cardiology Panayiotis Avraamides said that hypertension is a major problem worldwide since it constitutes the number one factor of risk for cardiovascular and other deaths.

In the framework of the Campaign, cardiologists will measure the blood pressure of people and they will inform them about hypertension, while they will distribute informational leaflets. The Campaign will take place in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaka and Paphos from 10 o’clock in the morning.
