DESPITE CALLS for greater consensus following record abstentions in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, party leaders yesterday began the delicate dance of alliances to see which forces will elect the next House Speaker in two weeks time, with an eye on the 2013 presidential elections.

By yesterday evening, it became increasingly likely the election for House Speaker on June 2 was going to be a two-horse race between EDEK leader Yiannakis Omirou and the incumbent, DIKO’s Marios Garoyian.

After a meeting of EDEK’s political bureau last night, spokesman Antonis Koutalianos announced that his party would seek greater consensus among the parties for the election of the new head of parliament.
