UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will head off to Geneva over the weekend to host next week’s Geneva conference on Cyprus.

Asked by journalists if the UNSG himself will travel to Geneva for the upcoming Cyprus talks, Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General said on Tuesday Guterres “is hosting and he will be hosting in person”.

“He will travel likely over the weekend and be in Geneva starting Monday”, he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The UN Secretary-General invited all parties involved to attend an informal five-plus-one meeting on the Cyprus issue in Geneva, Switzerland, from 27 to 29 April 2021.
