Today we celebrate 60 years of the Republic of Cyprus. In 1960, after centuries of occupation by foreign powers, Cypriots finally achieved freedom and self-determination. The significance of independence cannot be overstated and we must honour the memory of all those who have fought for and defended Cyprus’ freedom throughout the years.

Since independence, the presidents of the Republic of Cyprus have led the state towards success and stability. Our young and small country now sits proudly as a prosperous beacon of democracy in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Sadly, however, the Republic of Cyprus has only been free and united for the first quarter of its 60 year existence. Turkey’s long-planned, illegal and brutal invasions in 1974 divided the island and its people. Turkey has occupied over 36% of the island ever since. The consequences of the invasion and occupation are still felt to this day and, as young diaspora Cypriots, we will never forget them.

Turkey’s recent illegal actions have made Independence Day celebrations bittersweet. Instead of working towards a solution to the Cyprus issue, Turkey talks of permanent partition of the island. Instead of building peace, Turkey makes illegal incursions into Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone. Instead of de-escalating tensions, Turkey purposefully destabilises the region. These developments remind us that despite how far we have come, there are still immense challenges facing Cyprus.

We want to see a reunified Cyprus, where Cypriots live and prosper together – free from foreign occupation, free from foreign interference, free from division, and united for the benefit of all Cypriots.

Throughout the 60 years of the Republic of Cyprus, the Cypriot diaspora has stood by the island and supported its people through difficult times. The diaspora have also acted as a bridge, taking Cypriot culture, history and identity across the world. Through our daily life we introduce what is so beautiful about our homeland to people who know nothing about our island.

Finally, I would like to pay homage to the people of Cyprus who, despite facing stark challenges through the decades, have demonstrated remarkable resilience and courage to build a brighter future for our island. I know that they will continue to do so over the next 60 years and beyond, and the diaspora will be right by their side.

Happy Independence Day, Cyprus!

Christos Tuton

President, NEPOMAK
