The first ever UK Cypriot team to ever qualify for the FA Cup New Salamis produced a great performance against Hertfordshire team Colney Heath to win 1-0 with a well taken penalty from Kiri Portou.
There was a massive crowd in attendance at Haringey Borough stadium for the much anticipated game.
You could feel the tension going through the crowd and players.
Even so New Salamis were playing exciting football with all their players combining well to produce good teamwork and play.
They created a good start for themselves against Colney Heath who are one level above them.
New Salamis were at their best and created many chances and were rewarded with a penalty in the 25th minute which Kiri Portou slammed the ball into the back of the net to give them the lead.
Within minutes there were calls for another penalty when Deniz Mehmet was pulled down.
As the game went on New Salamis were creating opportunities to score but with no avail. And in the final fifteen minutes the reds pounded the Colney Heath rear guard .
One of their best opportunities was when Harrison Georgiou went past three opposing players and tried to lob the ball over the Colney Heath keeper who pulled off a great save to prevent a goal.
New Salamis now go into the second round of the preliminary stage to play the winners of Crawley Green v West Essex being played tonight. The winners of this match will go on to play New Salamis on Saturday 12th September 2020 at Haringey Borough stadium at 3pm.
