Cypriot MP George Loucaides has been unanimously appointed chairman of the ad hoc Committee to represent the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in the conference on democratic security in the Mediterranean, to be held on November 6 in Dubrovnik, with the participation of PACE members and parliamentary delegates from the Middle East and North Africa.

The appointment was made on Thursday during a meeting of the PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy.

On Wednesday, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Khemaies Jhinaoui addressed the plenary of the Assembly and replied to questions. Loucaides, who is the PACE rapporteur for the political transition in Tunisia, asked the Minister how the Council of Europe and PACE could further support his country.

Jhinaoui said Tunisia needed the support of its friends in Europe in efforts to address the challenges it is facing and to establish democracy, security and stability in the country.

During a meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, Loucaides expressed satisfaction over the fact that the organisation’s Committee of Ministers had adopted all the Assembly’s recommendations regarding Tunisia.
