Public expenditure, in 2015, on all levels of education, amounted to €1.150,0 million, based on the results of the Annual Survey on Education for the school year 2015/2016.

According to a press release issues by the statistical service, the total number of pupils and students at all educational levels was 181.537 recording a minor increase (1,9%) compared, to the school year 2014/2015 where the total number of pupils and students was 178.116.

The total number of educational establishments also increased to 1.322 in the school year 2015/2016, compared to 1.311 in the previous school year. Finally, during 2015/2016 the total number of teachers, amounted to 14.716 compared to 14.228 of the previous school year, also recording an increase (3,4%).

In Pre-school and Pre-primary education, for the school year 2015/2016, 726 kindergartens and day nursery schools operated, with 30.471 children enrolled. In Primary education 362 schools operated, attended by 54.292 pupils. In Secondary education 55.711 pupils enrolled in 167 schools. In Post-secondary Non-Tertiary education, 305 students attended in 8 public schools. In Tertiary education, 48 educational institutions operated with a total number of 40.347 students. Finally, 11 Special Schools operated with 411 pupils.

Public expenditure, in 2015, on all levels of education, amounted to €1.150,0 million and accounted for 16,1% of the Government Budget and 6,5% of the Gross Domestic Product.

The cost per student for public education, in 2015 measured, in terms of current expenditure, €4.958 for Pre-School and Pre-Primary, €6.189 for Primary, €9.536 for Secondary General, €12.240 for Secondary Technical and €10.321 for Tertiary education.
