The Cyprus Rugby team travelled to Zagred in Croatia with a level of confidence and self-belief, however from the off-set our players were at a disadvantage. Travelling with a squad of 10 players compared with other countries squads of 12-15 players.

A couple of key players dropped out due to work commitments. Additionally, the team were drawn against very tough opposition, playing in in divisions much higher than our own.

The first 2 games against Lithuania and Romania were lost quite convincingly, scoring 45-7 and 45-0 respectively, nonetheless, they only narrowly lost against Hungry, with a close score of 12-19.

Day 2, Cyprus played Hungary who also lost to Lithuania and Romania. Competing for 3rd and 4th playoffs.

Cyprus re-grouped and having acclimatised to the playing conditions sought revenge in a closely fought match. Tries coming from Captain Luke Frixou and winger Vaki Antoniou who scored the winning try in the last couple of minutes ensured Cyprus was ahead.

A few knocks were picked up and having an already depleted squad they were then drawn against Bulgaria. After a disastrous first half dropping 36 points, Cyprus came back with the score finishing at 17-43.

A re-focus is now required with the next men’s 7’s tournament coming up at the end of this month.

The Parikiaki and their followers wish Cyprus Rugby all the best for forthcoming 7’s competition. The Parikiaki will be covering their results.
