I am delighted to have been promoted by Jeremy Corbyn as the
Parliamentary Private Secretary PPS to Rebecca Long-Bailey, Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

I have been warmly welcomed by Rebecca and the rest of the team and I look forward to working with them and the Shadow Frontbench Team.

There is lots of work to do as the area covered is substantial and with recent developments about Carillion, I expect to be very busy over the coming weeks and months.EU Withdrawal Bill

Equalities and Human Rights

Yesterday I moved New Clause 16 to the EU Withdrawal Bill to ensure the protection of our equality rights as we leave the EU. These protections were hard fought for and we cannot allow them to be put at risk. Today I will be moving New Clause 15 to ensure non-regression of our rights.

We cannot allow any regression or diminishing of our protections and our rights when we leave the EU.

Representing Constituents

On Monday evening I held an adjournment debate in the House of Commons about the misuse of Xanax, after a concerned mother in Enfield Southgate raised the issue with me.
Xanax, a powerful sedative, is being abused by young people across the country. It is not available on the NHS, but is sold for as little as £1 a pill online.

Some young people are using Xanax to self-medicate to cope with anxiety, while younger teenagers are being groomed and exploited by drug pushers taking advantage of the drug’s ‘zombie-like’ effects.

The government needs to research its use and gather clear data, raise public awareness and put support in place for those who have developed a dependency.
