• Council responds to Highways England plans to alter M25 junction
• Proposals would cause chaos on borough’s roads
• Enfield Council is working to develop plan to deal with congestion on A10 and Bullsmoor Lane

Plans to change Junction 25 of the M25 would almost certainly cause traffic chaos on the surrounding roads says Enfield Council.

While agreeing that Highway England’s plans would benefit the M25, the Council says its own traffic modelling shows that surrounding roads in its borough including Bullsmoor Lane and the A10 would not be able to cope with the extra traffic generated – a state of affairs that would be “unacceptable”.

Roads around the M25 approaches are already heavily congested and Enfield Council has been working with Highways England and other organisations through its Northern Gateway Access Project (NGAP) to tackle the traffic issues.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Business, Cllr Alan Sitkin, said: “The Council is generally supportive of the need to make significant improvements at Junction 25 of the M25.

“However, this cannot be considered in isolation as current evidence suggests that this will simply aggravate queues and delays in Enfield, particularly on the already heavily congested A10 and A1055.

“We’re keen to continue to work with Highways England to determine a comprehensive and coordinated approach to network improvements in the region through the NGAP project.

“Given the substantial increase of traffic expected both in Enfield and many of its neighbours over the coming years, we must work together towards developing a more robust strategy to ensure that the isolated benefits of the proposed M25 J25 improvements are mutually compatible with the wider economic aspiration for the region.”
