  • State of the art provision provides extra high quality secondary school places
  • Facility will provide more than 200 places for sixth formers

Enfield Council’s education chief has officially opened Winchmore School’s new state-of-the-art sixth form block providing a great learning environment for hundreds of pupils.

Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services and Protection, Cllr Ayfer Orhan, joined staff and governors from the four schools based on the Broomfield School Campus in Wilmer Way, Southgate, to tour the new facility and official open the block.

It will offer a huge range of academic and vocational subjects to more than 200 pupils, providing A Levels in Computing, Economics, English Language, Geography, History, Physics, Psychology as well as BTECs in Business, Health & Social Care, ICT, Media and Sport.

Cllr Orhan said, “Since 2010, Enfield Council has created thousands of high quality new schools places for our children and young people and we have ensured that we have met the increasing demand and created real choice for the majority of students and parents in Enfield.

“The vision of our schools to work collaboratively here at Broomfield has created a vibrant campus which I’ve been able to see for myself.

“It is a unique situation that we have four schools coming together to make the most of the opportunity that this school site brings and widening the provision for all age groups in this part of the borough.

“Alongside the strong working relationship between Broomfield, Bowes, West Lea and Winchmore has been the Council’s funding commitment to date and we have committed a further £2.7m to be spent on the Campus over the next three years.

“By converting and extending facilities we have created something that I believe is example of partnership working for authorities across the country. This is one instance where it is absolutely true to say that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

Broomfield School’s Campus in Wilmer Way is now home to four schools. In 2014 Bowes Learning Alliance (now Enfield Learning Trust since Academisation in September) opened Bowes Southgate Green Primary School which now takes two forms of entry. West Lea School provides additional resourced provision to support children with special needs in a mainstream setting. These schools have now been joined by Winchmore School which is providing sixth form courses at the newly refurbished sixth form block.
