UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, has said that the European Commission is a close partner of the UN in efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

Eide who continues his meetings in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, met with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini with whom he discussed the steps ahead.

“The European Commission is a close partner in our efforts to support a settlement in Cyprus,” Eide said in a post on twitter, adding that he and Mogherini discussed the steps ahead.

Eide also said in another post on twitter that he had a constructive exchange of views on the Cyprus talks with Russia`s Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksey Meshkov. He added that his thanked Meschkov for the Russian support in the UN Security Council.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May last year with a view to reunite Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974, under a federal roof.
